According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, around 3 million Australians have back problems and seventy to ninety percent (70-90%) of this population is expected to suffer from back pain at some point in their lives.
In this article, I will share with you the causes and dangers of chronic back pain and how an ancient Chinese exercise can provide relief for this health concern.
So first, let’s have a clear description of what chronic back pain is.
What Is Chronic Back Pain?
Chronic back pain is felt as a stiffness, ache or tension in your back that persists. It can range from mild to severe pain that usually lasts for 3 months or more.
Sometimes, you may say that it is an on and off pain, but it never goes away. There are times it feels okay, like it’s just mild and tolerable. At other times, it’s debilitating and won’t allow you to get things done. You feel like you just don’t want to move and could stay in bed all day.
But what makes you more vulnerable than others? Why are you suffering from chronic back pain? Let’s find out here…
Why Do You Suffer from Chronic Back Pain?
Back pain affects all ages. However, there are factors that increase your risk of developing back pain such us being overweight, pregnancy, long-term use of anti-inflammatory medicine (corticosteroids) and a stressful lifestyle.
Overweight people and pregnant women often complain about back pain due to the extra weight they are bearing. This additional weight puts more pressure in their spine resulting in back pain. Meanwhile, corticosteroids can weaken the bones including your backbone (spine) that supports your body’s weight. Your weakened spine will exert more effort to keep your body stable and support your weight; thus, this tension causes your backache. Corticosteroid is a medication used by people who have inflammatory disorders such as asthma, lupus, allergies, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and multiple sclerosis. Moreover, stress causes the back muscles to tense, which triggers the back pain. Now if you are constantly over exposed to stress, then expect that you will have persistent back pains.
Furthermore, back pain also results from minor sprains, strains, or any back injury. Your everyday activities at home and at work also contribute to the development of back pain over time. Like what I said earlier, extra weight causes back pain. This extra weight can be from external sources such as when your daily work involves the regular carrying, lifting or moving of heavy objects.
And that’s not all! Incorrect posture is another major factor that gives you chronic back pain. This is common among those who have sitting jobs. People with jobs such as computer workers, call center agents, office secretary, bankers, and drivers have less physical movement with long periods of sitting. The problem is that many of those who have these sitting jobs have the tendency to slouch in chairs for long periods. Poor posture cause misalignment of your joints and muscles in your back and may cause wear on these structures resulting in back pain.
Worst of all, certain medical conditions, which include osteoarthritis, slip disc, sciatica, traumatic injury, kidney stones and spinal stenosis, can also be the cause of back pain. These diseases will require medical management.
On the other hand, there are many home remedies that you may use for your backache problems. One of the most effective back pain remedies that is becoming more popular these days is the ancient Chinese exercise known as Qigong.
So without further ado, let me introduce you to Qigong and give you an idea as to how it can help you with your chronic back pain.
How Can Qigong help with Your Chronic Back Pain?
Qigong is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique, which integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation. This exercise cultivates your body’s vital energy, which will help strengthen and heal each system in your body. It is an effective health care practice that most alternative medicine practitioners recommend.
Any age group including children can practice Qigong so your whole family can use it as a bonding exercise! In fact, Qigong helps in increasing children’s concentration, which is much needed during school age. Meanwhile, this exercise is an effective stress reliever for busy college students and office workers. Senior citizens won’t be left behind either because Qigong uses gentle movements so it is easy to follow. Sound good?
But that’s not all! My personal favourite benefit of practicing Qigong is its efficiency in relieving chronic back pain and preventing backaches from coming back, which means that this ancient Chinese exercise is best for you.
Why You Should Try Qigong?
Your back pain indicates an energy block due to injury, incorrect posture, stress, unhealthy lifestyle, muscle tension and any other cause of back problem. Be reminded that Qigong is specifically working on the body’s vital energy. This exercise maximises the flow of positive energy in your body known as Chi or Qi. It helps you improve your posture, balance and flexibility, strengthens your back muscles, and aids in weight loss, which were mentioned earlier as some of the major culprits of your persistent back pain.
Aside from relieving back pain, Qigong also increase your vitality, boost your immune system, builds stamina and reduces stress. Also, it enhances the functions of your cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic and digestive system. Another health benefit of Qigong is it speeds up your recovery from illness.
I can attest personally that Qigong is effective. I was once suffering from chronic back pain but right now…I am completely pain-free! How did that happen? I’m practicing Qigong at least 20 minutes a day. In fact, I’m so fascinated with Qigong, which made me spend a lot of time studying and practicing this remarkable Chinese exercise for the last 25 years.
