In some places, fluoride. This toxin is supposed to help prevent tooth decay, which is great news for concerned parents, and many patients who grew up with fluoridated water assure us that it kept their teeth healthy.
On the other hand, other patients who grew up without the ‘benefits’ of fluoride show us strong, healthy, cavity-free teeth well into their fifties or beyond. You can be sure there’s a lot more behind dental problems than the presence or absence of added fluoride.
Fluoride’s not the only toxin in our water supply, though. Chlorine is added to prevent the growth of disease-causing organisms (but still bad for the body); aluminium makes our water look clearer than it really is, and agricultural and industry run-off carries pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers into our water. Even alarming quantities of strong medications are being found in our waterways.
Recent research has shown that aluminium (linked to dementia and brain and bone disease in children) reacts with even small amounts of flouride to create highly toxic substances, but we have no idea what other kinds of toxic brews are developing in our waterways. Yet toxins are now recognised as a major cause of illness and disease.
